Paper Cuts




Also inspired by the Otomi Indians, fourth graders created amate bark paper cuts of fictional characters inspired by creatures, plants, and animals.

  1. Can you please post a tutorial on how you achieved these effects? I can't qite figure out if these are cutouts glued onto a "batiked" background or one piece of paper. Thanks!

Miriam- thanks, Pat- we used the colored butcher paper that comes on the big rolls (about 18 by 18 inches) and crumpled and flattened it with our hands about five times (or until it beings to soften) then I had the students iron it completely flat, giving it the texture you're seeing. They did this process to both pieces of paper, and then cut their sketched motif out and applied that to their background sheet (some chose to add details with left over pieces from their paper after cutting their shapes) Before attaching the motif, they took a piece of chalk pastel and rubbed it on its side across the entire background piece of paper, giving it the batiked look. I encouraged some students to outline their design also. The options are endless, try it and post your outcomes :)
